Caspase-5 also known as CAPS5 is a member of the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family. Caspase-5 play a significant role in the inflammatory response by cleaving pro-inflammatory cytokines, thereby facilitating their maturation and release. This function is particularly important in the context of immune responses and tissue homeostasis, as dysregulation of caspase activity can lead to various pathological conditions, including cancer and autoimmune diseases. The human Caspase-5 gene is located on chromosome 11q22.3 and is predominantly expressed in the brain, with notable levels in the lung, liver, and skeletal muscle, highlighting its potential involvement in both central and peripheral immune responses.
