Cytokeratin 13 is predominantly located in the cytoskeletal region of epithelial cells, where Cytokeratin 13 plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular structure and integrity, particularly in non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelia. Cytokeratin 13 expression is significant in tissue differentiation and serves as a marker for identifying malignant tumors, especially in squamous cell carcinomas. Notably, defects in the KRT13 gene can lead to white sponge nevus of Cannon, a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by soft, white, spongy plaques in the oral mucosa, underscoring Cytokeratin 13′s importance in both normal physiology and disease states.
