SCARB1 also known as SR-B1, SR-BI is a multi-ligand cell-surface receptor that facilitates uptake of lipids from cholesterol into cells. SCARB1 is part of the CD36 scavenger receptor superfamily, which is composed of many proteins with varied structures, expressions, and functions across tissue and cell types. SCARB1 recognizes a variety of ligands: high density lipoprotein (HDL), phospholipids, phosphatidylserine, and lipoproteins such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In addition, this protein is a receptor for hepatitis C virus glycoprotein E2 and facilitates cell entry by the virus, SARS-CoV2.
