| Product Description | |
MVK(Mevalonate kinase) is an early enzyme in isoprenoid and sterol synthesis. MVK plays a crucial role as an early enzyme in the biosynthesis of isoprenoids and sterols, catalyzing the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of mevalonic acid to produce mevalonate 5-phosphate. This reaction is vital because mevalonate serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of cholesterol and other essential biomolecules, which are critical for cellular membrane integrity and signaling pathways. Deficiencies in MVK activity can lead to serious metabolic disorders, such as mevalonic aciduria and hyperimmunoglobulinemia D/periodic fever syndrome (HIDS), where the accumulation of mevalonic acid occurs due to the impaired conversion to 5-phosphomevalonic acid. |
