Axin1 is a cytoplasmic protein which contains a regulation of G-protein signaling (RGS) domain and a dishevelled and axin (DIX) domain. Axin1 plays a crucial role in the regulation of the Wnt signaling pathway, which is essential for various cellular processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. Axin1 functions as a scaffold that facilitates the formation of a complex with β-catenin, adenomatous polyposis coli (APC), and glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK-3β), promoting the degradation of β-catenin. This degradation is vital for preventing aberrant Wnt signaling, which can lead to developmental disorders and cancer. Additionally, Axin1′s structural similarity to Conductin, which shares 45% identity, suggests that Axin may have overlapping functions in Wnt signaling regulation.
