Cytokeratin 14 is predominantly located in the basal layer of the epidermis, forming part of the intermediate filament network that provides mechanical support and stability to keratinocytes. Cytokeratin 14 expression helps protect against mechanical stress and contributes to the skin′s barrier function. Mutations in Cytokeratin 14 can lead to conditions such as epidermolysis bullosa simplex, a genetic disorder characterized by skin fragility and blistering. Cytokeratin 14 serves as a marker for epithelial differentiation and aids in diagnosing various skin malignancies, including Bowen′s disease, where expression patterns can indicate neoplastic changes.
