Hexokinase I also known as HXK-1，HK-1 is one of four hexokinase isoenzymes, Hexokinase I plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism, catalyzing the conversion of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate, which is the first step in the glycolytic pathway. This enzymatic activity is vital for cellular energy production and metabolic regulation, particularly in tissues with high energy demands such as the brain, heart, and kidneys, where Hexokinase I is predominantly expressed. The regulation of glucose metabolism by Hexokinase I is essential for maintaining glucose homeostasis, and dysfunction can lead to metabolic disorders, including diabetes.
