OSM(Oncostatin M) is a member of the leukemia inhibitory factor/oncostatin-M (LIF/OSM) family of proteins. OSM plays a crucial role in regulating cell growth and differentiation, particularly in inflammation and cancer. OSM was initially isolated from the conditioned medium of U937 human histiocytic leukemia cells that had been induced to differentiate into macrophage-like cells. OSM inhibits the growth of a wide range of human tumor cell lines while sparing normal human fibroblasts, highlighting OSM′s potential as a therapeutic target in oncology. OSM interacts with high-affinity binding sites on both normal and tumor cells, and OSM expression is significantly elevated in activated monocytic and lymphocytic cell lines, as well as in normal adherent macrophages.
