Product Description

Hexokinase II also known as HXK II, HK2 plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism, catalyzing the conversion of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate, which is the first step in the glycolytic pathway. This enzymatic activity is vital for cellular energy production and metabolic regulation, particularly in tissues that rely heavily on glucose, such as adipose and skeletal muscle. Hexokinase II is one of four hexokinase isoenzymes, each with distinct tissue distributions and regulatory mechanisms. While Hexokinase I is expressed in brain, kidney, and heart tissues, Hexokinase II is predominantly found in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, where Hexokinase II facilitates glucose uptake in response to insulin. The regulation of Hexokinase II activity is essential for maintaining glucose homeostasis, and dysfunction is associated with metabolic disorders, including diabetes.
