OPG (Osteoprotegerin) also known as TNFRSF11B, OCIF is a member of the TNF-receptor superfamily. OPG plays a crucial role in bone metabolism, primarily by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis, which is essential for maintaining bone density and preventing excessive bone resorption. As a secreted glycoprotein and member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor family, OPG acts as a decoy receptor for osteoclast differentiation factor (also known as RANKL), thereby preventing its interaction with RANK on osteoclast progenitor cells.
