Endothelin-1 also known as ET-1, EDN-1 is a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate a secreted peptide that belongs to the endothelin/sarafotoxin family. Endothelin-1 plays a crucial role in regulating vascular tone and blood pressure. Endothelin-1 function is vital as this peptide influences cardiovascular health, and dysregulation of endothelin-1 levels has been implicated in various pathological conditions, including hypertension and heart failure. Endothelin-1 production is tightly controlled, as this peptide is generated from a larger precursor known as big-endothelin through the action of endothelin-converting enzymes.
