PLCβ2 also known as PLCBeta2, PLCB2 is a phosphodiesterase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate to the second messengers inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol. PLCβ2 plays a vital role in cellular signaling, particularly in receptor-mediated signal transduction, where PLCβ2 generates critical second messengers such as inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate and diacylglycerol from phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate. This process is essential for various physiological responses, including platelet activation and insulin secretion regulation in pancreatic cells. PLCβ2 is predominantly expressed in peripheral regions of islet and acinar cells in rat pancreas, highlighting PLCβ2′s importance in endocrine and exocrine functions. PLCβ2 is unique among phospholipase C isozymes as PLCβ2 is regulated by G protein subunits, which are activated by heterotrimeric GTP-binding proteins linked to diverse cell surface receptors.
