Nucleolin (NCL) also known as C23 is a crucial eukaryotic nucleolar phosphoprotein that plays a significant role in the synthesis and maturation of ribosomes, which are essential for protein synthesis in all living cells. Nucleolin is primarily localized in the dense fibrillar regions of the nucleolus, where Nucleolin contains four RNA binding domains that facilitate interaction with pre-ribosomal RNA during ribosome biogenesis. This localization ensures efficient processing of ribosomal RNA and assembly of ribosomal subunits, which are necessary for cellular function and growth. Nucleolin interacts with various proteins, including nucleolar protein B23, and phosphorylation by Cdc2 and casein kinase II leads to translocation from the nucleolus to the cytoplasm, highlighting a dynamic role in cellular processes.
