GART(GAR transformylase) is a trifunctional polypeptide. It has phosphoribosylglycinamide formyltransferase, phosphoribosylglycinamide synthetase, phosphoribosylaminoimidazole synthetase activity which is required for de novo purine biosynthesis. This enzyme is highly conserved in vertebrates. GART plays a crucial role in the de novo biosynthesis of purines, The importance of GART is underscored by conservation across vertebrates and expression of two isoforms resulting from alternative splicing, which may have implications in various biological processes and disease states. Given that cancer cells have an increased demand for purines to support rapid proliferation, GART has emerged as a significant target for cancer chemotherapy, highlighting potential as a therapeutic intervention point. |
