Caspase-2 also knonw as CASP2 is a member of the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family. Caspase-2 is an aspartate-specific cysteine protease that plays a crucial role in the apoptotic process, being activated in response to various apoptotic stimuli. Caspase-2 is unique among caspases due to its dual characteristics, possessing features of both upstream caspases, with a long prodomain, and downstream caspases, with DEXD substrate specificity. Notably, caspase-2 is predominantly expressed in the brain during development and is found at lower levels in adult tissues. Caspase-2 is localized in several cellular compartments, including the mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, cytoplasm, and nucleus, which is significant as localization is essential for its role in apoptosis regulation.
