FAP is a homodimeric integral membrane gelatinase belonging to the serine protease family. FAP is essential for remodeling developing tissues, highlighting FAP′s importance in both normal and pathological processes. Structurally, FAP is an integral membrane gelatinase composed of N-glycosylated, proteolytically inactive subunits, which underscores unique functional properties. FAP expression on chondrocyte membranes is upregulated by cytokines interleukin-1 and oncostatin M, and increases in patients with osteoarthritis. This expression is co-localized with matrix metalloproteinases MMP-1 and MMP-13, as well as CD44 variants v3 and v7/8, indicating involvement in complex cellular interactions.
