PKCε also known as PKC epsilon, PRKCE, PKCE is a family of serine-and threonine-specific protein kinases that can be activated by calcium and the second messenger diacylglycerol. PKCε protein is primarily located in the cytoplasm and can translocate to the plasma membrane upon activation, which is essential for function in mediating responses to growth factors and hormones. Such translocation allows PKCε protein to interact with various substrates and signaling molecules, thereby influencing processes such as apoptosis and inflammation. PKCε protein is involved in the modulation of gene expression and has been implicated in various diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, making PKCε protein a significant target for therapeutic interventions. Specific activation by diacylglycerols and phorbol esters further underscores PKCε protein importance in cellular signaling and potential as a biomarker for disease states. |
