PSA also known as KLK3 is a serine protease primarily produced in the prostate gland, which plays a crucial role in the liquefaction of semen by hydrolyzing semenogelin I, a major protein in seminal plasma. This enzymatic activity is vital for male fertility, as PSA allows sperm to swim freely after ejaculation. Elevated levels of PSA in the blood are often associated with prostate cancer, making PSA an important biomarker for early detection and monitoring of the disease. In addition to PSA′s role in prostate tissues, PSA has also been found in other male reproductive organs and even in breast cancer, highlighting PSA′s significance beyond just prostate health. |
