PSMA6 is a member of the peptidase T1A family, that is a 20S core alpha subunit. PSMA6 plays a crucial role in cellular protein homeostasis by degrading unnecessary or damaged proteins, a process vital for maintaining cellular function and regulating various biological pathways. Located in the cytoplasm and nucleus, PSMA6 is a core component of the larger 26S proteasome complex, essential for selective degradation of ubiquitin-tagged proteins. This selective degradation is important for processes such as cell cycle regulation, modulation of signal transduction pathways, and removal of misfolded proteins, thereby preventing cellular stress and potential disease states.
