CD24 is a sialoglycoprotein that is expressed on mature granulocytes and B cells and modulates growth and differentiation signals to these cells. CD24 is also present on granulocytes and a small subset of thymocytes and neuroblastomas, but absent in plasma cells. CD24 plays a crucial role in regulating B cell proliferation and differentiation, serving as an important marker in hematological malignancies and various solid tumors. CD24 localization can shift from an apical position to a cytoplasmic distribution, serving as a surrogate marker for stromal invasion in ovarian serous tumors of borderline malignancy. As a differentiation marker for B cells, CD24 is expressed on mature resting B cells and disappears upon stimulation, highlighting CD24′s importance in understanding B cell biology and cancer research. |
