MMP-8(Matrix metallopeptidase 8) also known as Collagenase-2 is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family of proteins. Tplays a crucial role in the degradation of fibrillar collagen types I, II, and III, which is essential for tissue remodeling and repair. MMP-8 is predominantly expressed in inflammatory conditions, highlighting its importance in processes such as wound healing and the postpartum involution of the uterus. Various stimuli influence MMP-8 expression, including phorbol ester and lipopolysaccharide, which activate gene transcription. MMP-8′s activity depends on calcium and zinc ions, which are critical for catalytic function. |
