CD7 is a transmembrane protein which is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. CD7 protein is found on thymocytes and mature T cells. CD7 plays an essential role in T-cell interactions and also in T-cell/B-cell interaction during early lymphoid development. CD7 expression serves as a marker for various hematological malignancies, including pluripotent stem cell leukemias and T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. CD7 has been implicated in the activation of T cells with gamma/delta receptors, highlighting its importance in immune responses. Studies have shown that CD8 T cells from HIV-1-infected patients exhibit a marked down-regulation of CD7 expression compared to healthy individuals, indicating CD7′s potential role in immune evasion during viral infections. |
