Product Description

AE1 also known as Band3, CD233, SCL4A1 is part of the anion exchanger (AE) family and is expressed in the erythrocyte plasma membrane, where it functions as a chloride/bicarbonate exchanger involved in carbon dioxide transport from tissues to lungs. AE1 plays a significant role in maintaining cell structural integrity and facilitating chloride and bicarbonate ion exchange across the phospholipid bilayer. AE1′s importance lies in dual functionality, mediated by a unique structure comprising approximately 900 amino acids organized into two distinct domains. The amino-terminal domain, referred to as the cytoplasmic domain of erythrocyte membrane AE1, serves as an essential attachment site for the erythrocyte cytoskeleton by binding to ankyrin, providing mechanical stability to the red blood cell.
