Cyclin E1 belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, whose members are characterized by a dramatic periodicity in protein abundance through the cell cycle. Cyclin E plays a pivotal role in the regulation of the cell cycle, particularly during the transition from the G1 phase to S phase. Cyclin E partners with the transcription factor E2F to drive the expression of genes necessary for DNA synthesis.
