Unlike ubiquitin, which primarily tags proteins for degradation, SUMO1 modifies proteins to enhance stability and functionality, making SUMO1 essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis. SUMO1 is predominantly localized to the nuclear membrane and nuclear bodies, where SUMO1 interacts with key regulatory proteins such as IκBa, MDM2, and p53, influencing their activity and stability. |
