p70 S6 kinase also known as S6K1 or RPS6KB1 is a member of the ribosomal S6 kinase family of serine/threonine kinases. p70 S6 kinase playing a critical role in regulating cell growth, proliferation, and metabolism through phosphorylation of the 40S ribosomal protein S6, which enhances protein synthesis. Structurally, p70 S6 kinase α consists of several key domains, including an N-terminal kinase domain responsible for catalytic activity, a regulatory linker region containing multiple phosphorylation sites, and a C-terminal autoinhibitory domain that modulates activation status. This structural configuration enables precise control over cellular processes through phosphorylation-induced conformational changes within these domains. Aberrations in p70 S6 kinase α can lead to dysregulation of cell growth and are implicated in various diseases including cancer, diabetes, and neurological disorders. |
